Skincare Don’ts

Welcome to SkinWise Rx's two part blog outlining some of Dr. Doser’s recommendations for proper skincare. Part one will cover some of the “Don’ts” of skincare, followed by part two and the “Dos”

A poor skincare routine can have detrimental effects on your skin. Washing your face too infrequently can lead to the accumulation of dirt, oil, and impurities, which clogs pores and contributes to acne breakouts. Lack of proper hydration, excessive alcohol consumption, and failure to moisturize can result in dryness, flakiness, and a compromised skin barrier. Dead skin cells can build up if you’re not exfoliating, leading to a dull and uneven complexion. And failure to protect the skin from harmful UV rays causes sun damage, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Ultimately, a poor skincare routine will leave your skin looking dull and prone to issues that damage your skin’s vitality.

Lack of proper hydration, excessive alcohol consumption, and failure to moisturize can result in dryness, flakiness, and a compromised skin barrier.

Don’t wash your face too much. Washing your face excessively can damage and disrupt the natural balance of your skin. Washing too frequently or using harsh cleansers can strip away natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation which can lead to increased oil production as the skin tries to compensate. It can also disrupt your skin's protective barrier, making it more susceptible to pollutants and other damaging environmental factors. Additionally, frequent washing can damage the skin's microbiome - the beneficial bacteria that lives on your skin and helps maintain healthy skin. Under most circumstances, Dr. Doser recommends washing your face no more than twice a day to remove impurities and makeup.
Resist the urge to pop those zits. Popping zits, though enjoyable, can be harmful to your skin for a few reasons. First, it spreads bacteria and infection leading to even more breakouts. Squeezing pimples will also damage the surrounding skin, causing redness, swelling, and even scars. It makes healing take longer. Popping zits can actually push the contents deeper into your skin, potentially leading to the formation of cysts or nodules. So resist the temptation to pop zits and instead go for a gentle skincare routine that protects your skin.

Limit the hootch. Drinking alcohol can give your skin a hangover as well. Because alcohol is a diuretic it can dehydrate you and that includes your skin. Dehydration leads to dry, dull skin and increases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Alcohol also dilates blood vessels, causing redness and flushing and disrupting your skin's natural balance. This can also lead to increased oil production, potentially worsening acne and other skin conditions. And it doesn’t end there. Excessive alcohol consumption can compromise your liver's ability to detoxify the body effectively, which will then impact your skin’s overall health. Drink in moderation and stay hydrated to help minimize alcohol’s effects on your skin.
Applying too much makeup can also have negative effects on the skin. Excessive makeup clogs pores which leads to blackheads, whiteheads, and acne breakouts. Thick layers of makeup can also prevent the skin from breathing, causing irritation, dryness, and dullness. Some makeup products contain harsh ingredients that will irritate the skin even more when you are wearing too much. Additionally, you have to remove all that makeup. This can require vigorous cleansing that can damage the skin barrier leading to further skin issues. Apply makeup in moderation and make sure you have proper cleansing and skincare routines to maintain healthy skin.

In part two, we will discuss Dr. Doser’s recommended “Dos” of proper skincare.
